Santo Domingo.- The tourism sector, measured by the number of non-resident foreign visitors to the country, registered a growth of 10.1% during the first eight months this year.

A report published by the Central Bank yesterday indicates that, from January to August this year, 2 million 448 thousand 769 non-resident foreign visitors came to the country, 225,200 more than the previous year during that same period of time.

Should this tendency persist, the country could lodge close to four million tourists this year. Tourism is the principal currency generator in the Dominican Republic, followed by exports and remittances.

The report indicates that 51.4% of the tourists arrived through the Punta Cana airport; 18.4% through the Gregorio Luperon terminal in Puerto Plata; 17.8% through Las Americas airport and the remainder, through La Romana, Cibao and la Isbela.

Half of these tourists come from the United States and 40.7% from Europe. The rest came from South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
