FIRST STEP: Provisional Residency

The initial process is of course the application for legal provisional residency first. In this regard, there is of course a list of requirements to meet, but they are fairly simple to comply with for most people. One such requirement is the medical exam that MUST be taken inside the country with the medical doctor at the Department of Immigration. While this sounds somewhat daunting, it is not, and in fact the entire process can take less than two hours (including time waiting your turn). A very brief interview is conducted, asking the applicant some standard questions (have you had any surgery in the last five years, do you take any prescription medication, etc.) In addition, a urine sample, a blood sample and chest x-ray is taken. What they are looking for is Aids, illegal drug usage and tuberculosis. Providing you have none of these ailments, you will pass with flying colors.

The Dominican Republic has been called one of the best and last remaining property bargains in the entire Caribbean. In fact, it may also be one of the very few destinations that can also offer so much in terms of diversity: Metropolitan areas such as the Capital City of Santo Domingo or Santiago, Beach Resort areas such as Punta Cana, Juan Dolio, Samana, and many, many others. For those that want to simply live in a warm weather climate, but are not fans of living in a beach community, the Dominican Republic also offers beautiful mountain regions - often called the Alps of the Caribbean, offering the highest elevations as well (during the months of January & February, there is frost in the areas surrounding Constanza and Jarabacoa in the early morning).

Of course you already knew that the Dominican Republic offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. You also knew it was one of the most affordable travel or vacation destinations as well. Dominican residency is a very useful status to acquire for a variety of reasons: 1) It facilitates a number of business transactions in the D.R., including obtaining bank loans, buying real estate and applying for credit; 2) It makes one eligible for lower tuition at Dominican universities; 3) It permits one to work legally in the Dominican Republic; 4) One can take advantage of Law 14-93, Art. 13, and import most household goods duty free.

In order to obtain Dominican residency, it is first necessary to obtain a residence visa. Even if one is already in the Dominican Republic under another kind of visa, such as a tourist card or tourist visa or business visa, a residence visa must be applied for and obtained before obtaining a provisional residence card, which is the final document certifying that one has valid Dominican residency.
