Questions & Answers About Living in The Dominican Republic

Many people have written in asking about the current situation in the Dominican Republic. What is the Dominican republic real estate market like? Is the country safe for foreigners? Are the banks safe and insured? How have any economic or political changes affected the country? Is the Dominican Republic still a good place to consider for retirement or relocation? To provide a very honest and profound answer to these and many, many other questions - we have decided to put this section together. Hopefully you will find some questions that you may have had with the corresponding answers as well, not to mention answers or replies to even some rumors you may have heard also. Quite honestly, information is great providing it is the correct information. Which is to say, there are always rumors and stereotypes often ingrained in the minds of the general public about a particular place or country. Some rumors may be true while others may be sort of true (but not exactly as was conveyed or interpreted), and some of course very false. Again, the idea behind this section is to provide come very candid answers to some of the questions and comments we have heard over the past six months or so.

A report published by the Central Bank yesterday indicates that, from January to August this year, 2 million 448 thousand 769 non-resident foreign visitors came to the country, 225,200 more than the previous year during that same period of time.

Travel expert Lonely Planet describes the Dominican Republic as a great place to party, relax or explore, saying: "The white-sand beaches, impressive mountain ranges veined with spectacular rivers and waterfalls, and saltwater lakes teeming with exotic wildlife are just part of the appeal."

Dominican Republic honored as unsung heroe during Holocaust

September, 12 - 10:33 AM

New Yorl.- The TimesLedger website reported that borough officials here gathered at Queensborough Community College Sunday for the unveiling of a Holocaust exhibit honoring an unsung hero of World War II: the Dominican Republic.

TimesLedger.com reporter Stephen Stirling described how the Harriet and Kenneth Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center at the college officially opened its new exhibit, "Sosua, Refuge from the Holocaust in the Tropics," which pays tribute to the compassion and generosity showed by the Caribbean nation during the war.

The article goes on to praise the Dominican Republic as one of the few countries to offer a safe haven for refugees fleeing persecution in Germany and Austria while opening its doors to 100,000 Jews desperately eager to leave the Nazi-controlled areas when other nations, including the United States, kept theirs shut.

Dominican Republic displaces Puerto Rico in tourists’ reception

SAN JUAN.- Puerto Rico has lost its leadership as main destination in the Caribbean, after 40 years of being the top tourism pole of the region.

Based on statistics of the World Tourism Organization, in 2003, tourism activity in the Dominican Republic generated some US$3.11 billion, while, in Puerto Rico, the benefit was of US$2.67 billion. In 2003, 3,238,000 tourists visited Puerto Rico in contrast with 3,282,000 that visited the Dominican Republic.

About the Dominican Republic:

Nestled amid Cuba, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico in the heart of the Caribbean archipelago, the island of Hispaniola (Little Spain) is divided between Haiti, on the westernmost third of the island, and the Dominican Republic, which has a lush landmass about the size of Vermont and New Hampshire combined. In the Dominican interior, the fertile Valley of Cibao (rich sugarcane country) ends its upward sweep at Pico Duarte, the highest mountain peak in the West Indies, which soars to 3,125m (10,417 ft.).

Much of what Columbus first sighted still remains in a natural, unspoiled condition. One-third of the Dominican Republic's 1,401km (870-mile) coastline is devoted to beaches. Columbus sighted its coral-edged Caribbean coastline on his first voyage to the New World and pronounced: "There is no more beautiful island in the world." The first permanent European settlement in the New World was on November 7, 1493, and its ruins still remain near Montecristi in the northeast part of the island.

Living in The Dominican Republic 2007:

What if someone told you that it was possible to pack your bags and relocate to a place whereby you can buy a brand new home for 25 per-cent of the current value of the home you are now living in (sell your current home, buy a brand new home of similar size for less than half that amount or maybe even one fourth, and place the difference in the bank so you can live off the interest) - would you consider it? What if someone told you that this new destination offered the opportunity for you to have a monthly income from bank account interest locally tax-free, sufficient enough with the equivalent of US$100,000 in the bank to cover your monthly living expenses (utilities, food shopping, golf fees or other leisure activities) - would you be interested to learn more? If the answer to both these questions is YES - then this is the benefit in brief for Americans and Europeans who have in interest in relocating to the Dominican Republic (year round temperate weather with no snow does not hurt either).
